The Motorola Defy is a great device for outdoorsy types who require a little more from their handset than merely the ability to send a text. It’s one of the first smart phones to sport a rugged case that might survive the dangers of pockets, as well as water, dust, and accidental knocks.
The Defy is certified to an IP67 level of toughness, which means it can spend 10 minutes under water up to 1m deep without breaking, and unlike other rugged phones, the Defy actually has the smart phone capabilities to get apps like Twitter up and running. It runs Android 2.1, which makes everything from downloading apps to surfing the Web a pleasure.
A 94mm (3.7-inch) capacitive touchscreen means the Defy looks and acts like a typical smart phone. Only its rubbery case, headphone port and USB ports, which are plugged with rubber stoppers, give the game away.
The Defy runs Motorola's Motoblur skin on top of Android, which adds a handful of widgets and social networking features, and the handset has a 5 megapixel camera on board with an LED photo light.
With most smart phones, cracked screens and hideous cases are usually a given. With most rugged phones, you usually only get the bare-bones phone features, but the Defy has changed all that. This handset could be the shape of things to come.
